Unwell & still going to work.

2.5 million people are currently inactive from the job market due to long term health problems.

Thats alot of sick people!

Why are so many people in this situation?

Lets think it through.

Much of the workplace is a reactive environment. Historically, HR & employers have only taken action to prevent long term sickness at the point of occurrence. Much of the preemptive effort is superficial at best, and constrained due to budgets.

Owners and shareholders have no interest in investing in preventative measures that demonstrate no hard return.

This was the old school mindset in boardrooms.

However, things have slowly started to tip in the other direction.

Stress and anxiey has ravaged the workforce. When our bodies are consistently in a heightened state of stress, it inevitably leads to physical ailments too.

Dr Joe Dispenza in America stated that we spend 70% of our lives in flight or fight mode. This releases stress hormones into our bodies for prolonged periods, which triggers the process of cellular degradation.

We literally kill our body cells through stress, we cause our cells to misbehave, leading to all kinds of modern illnesses.

Too many people are unwell and still try to work their way through it. This approach must be de-normalized.

I fully advocate for lighter duties and remote working to help people through their adjustment phases.

We need to adjust out approach, heal people and bring them back to 100% productivity.

How do we do this?

A full culture shift in the workplace with a wider focus on employee wellbeing.

This should include;

  • Workplace diet

  • Time away from the desk

  • Informed leadership

  • Wellbeing strategy

  • Tangible mindfulness

  • Ethics

  • Personal development

Ethics is a big one, especially integrity.

A lack of integrity has been normalized at the hightest levels of society.

Workplace mistakes need not be covered up. We need to embrace accountability. This has been problematic for employee mental health.

I can recall many instances where people have covered something up, which has then led to further stress.

We need to re-train our employees on the ethics of the workplace, starting from leadership down.

Greasy food served in corporate canteens is not going to assist workplace wellbeing either. Far from it. Afternoon productivity following a greasy fish and chips from the workplace canteen is not going to help your bottom line.

We need to encourage vibrant, healthy, energy inducing brain foods full of wholegrains & nuts to re-fuel the workforce.

This is a well known aspect of the ancient Indian ayurvedic diet followed by the yogis.

Yoga involves many other things outside of meditation and breathwork.

Although breathwork does play a massive part. The yogis called this their inner cleansing technique.

Employee wellbeing could benefit from this ancient philosophy.

The science of yesteryear could very well be the solution for todays workplace wellbeing conundrum.
