10 Signs Of Poor Mental Health At Work

1. The person seems more withdrawn than usual. Please note whether the person usually enjoys quiet time.

2. The long stare. Does the person stare off into the distance when you are speaking to them. It means they may be thinking about something else that is worrying them.

3. Do they get upset over a small issue. This may indicate an underlying emotional fragility. A healthy person should be less reactive.

4. Is the person taking more sick days than usual. An obvious one. Perhaps further gentle probing is needed to discover the true cause.

5. Is their physical appearance deteriorating, perhaps it is unkempt hair or tired eyes. Again, there should be a consistent pattern compared to the persons normal appearance.

6. Super obvious, but has the person directly told you that they are feeling burnt out or stressed. You MUST take this seriously, if you ignore such a direct approach it will only make matters worse.

7. Has the persons usually high standards of work dropped. Deadlines missed, basic mistakes in work, e-mails not being responded to.

8. Does the person avoid social interactions. Perhaps they used to go to lunch with colleagues & no longer do. Perhaps they used to be more talkative & outgoing.

9. Do they seem anxious or on edge. Physical symptoms such as heavy breathing, weight loss or shaking all indicate mental distress.

10. Are there any signs of addictive or comforting behaviours, over eating, alcohol on the breath or increased smoking in the workplace. These are sensitive issues & must be approached with care & caution.

It is so important that if you are a manager or leader at work to approach mental health issues with compassion.

The person is already going through alot! Right now, they need you're care & not your condemnation!
